It seems Indian Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi’s efforts have really attracted the Big Boy across the world to invest in India for some or the other reason. From China to Taiwan and Korea, every tech player is trying to get a bigger share in India.

And now it’s Apple, the biggest technology company in the World has shown interest in India as an investment destination. Apple CEO, Tim Cook on his four-day visit to India shared a lot of things which indicated that Apple is also among the list of companies showing interest in expanding their business here.

In his meeting with PM Modi, Tim stressed the possibilities of producing and retailing Apple devices in India. However, no specific announcement regarding their investment plans were made, the 55-year old Apple head said, “We have thought through many areas (of investment) and we will move ahead in all these areas. What we have announced in Hyderabad and Bengaluru are just a couple of initial things, there’s more coming. We are committed to India”.

Earlier, California-based tech giant, Cupertino announced its first development centre to work on Apple Maps in Hyderabad. In addition, Cook also unveiled an app design and development centre in Bengaluru for supporting the Indian developers who are into creating mobile apps for its iOS platform.

India and Apple – Present and Future

On the question of manufacturing iPhones in the country, Cook said, “We are looking at India as a partner across (segments), not just for any one area. Manufacturing is something we will logically look at.”

Elaborating on his future business plans in India, Tim said that he is not thinking about hunting market share in the country, however wants to associate with Indian telecom operators to improve the service quality. He said, “We are in India for the next thousand years. Our horizon is very long. We are focused on best, not most. So it doesn’t bother me that we don’t have top market share”.

While Apple reaps a significant amount of its sales in the US and other markets through partnerships with telecom operators, it has not been able to push through in India. “I see a great technical collaboration between Apple and main carriers in India and to make sure the iPhone works incredible on those networks. The feedback I have thus far is very positive on that. We push really hard, in some ways they think we are crazy, but they love it as well that someone is pushing them hard to work together to solve the most difficult problem.”

Scope for Apple in India in the future

On asking if India could beat China for Apple some day, Tim said that India is all set to grow exponentially with all its ingredients in place. “I see a lot of positive things happen in the country and more will happen. From GDP point of view there is no doubt in my mind that India will set new records. I can feel it will happen,” Apple Chief said.
